Vernon “Vern” Allen Hoover, age 92, of Camp Hill , was embraced by Jesus on Sunday, September 21, 2014. Vern was born on Saturday, July 1, 1922 in Harrisburg to the late Rueben Hoover and Carrie (Wade) Hoover. Vern is preceded in death by his step-daughter, Michele Marie Casey, who died on August 25, 2012.
Vern’s survivors include his loving wife, Marie Elizabeth (Garverick) Baker Hoover; his brother, George Hoover and his wife, Erma, of Camp Hill; his sister, Jeanne Shearer of Wormleysburg; his five step-children, Robert C. Baker, Jr., Patricia Bankert, John C. Baker, Elizabeth Leach, Ann Pierce; his 18 step-grandchildren; his 23 step-great grandchildren; and his seven very special nieces and nephews.
Vern graduated from William Penn High School as part of the class of 1940. He was a proud veteran of the Army Air Corps , which is now known as the US Air Force , and he was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg. Vern was probably best known as the owner of Hoover’s Appliance in Lemoyne, where he worked from an early age until his retirement in 2000, and as the co-owner of Hoover’s Plaza in Lemoyne. “I retired, bought a house, and got married all in the same month,” Vern loved to say. He was a member of the VFW in Lower Allen and the American Legion . Vern was an extremely organized person. He loved traveling and jazz, and he spent many happy hours reading his newspapers and watching sports on TV. Above all, Vern adored his bride, Marie; and she him.
All are welcome to join Vern’s family at his viewing on Sunday, September 28, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. until time of prayer service at 5:00 p.m.; with Deacon Jack Paruso leading at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; and at his Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, September 29, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.; with Reverend Louis P. Ogden celebrating at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church , 400 East Simpson Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Burial will immediately follow the Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery in Harrisburg, where military honors will be presented. Honored to be pallbearers are: Thomas Platt, James Casey, James Baker, John Mohnach, Andrew Hoover, and David Hoover.
