Viola “Gando” Ardella (Rickard) Fought, 90, of Mechanicsburg died at Holy Spirit Hospital on Friday, March 16, 2012. She was born in Enola on Wednesday, August 31, 1921 daughter of the late Edna Ardella (Wright) Rickard who died when Viola was four and Milton and Mary Gross who loved and raised Viola as their own daughter. Viola was the widow of Benson Reynolds, who died in 1948, and Mervin Fought who died in 1989.
Viola graduated from Lemoyne High School as part of the class of 1939. She was a member of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg since 1951 and she worked at the Book of the Month Club for nine years. Family was Viola’s entire life. She was an amazing baker of pies and made the best pie crusts. Viola loved to travel and enjoyed her annual beach trips. All of the summer flowers would bring a smile to her heart, especially the pink ones.
Viola’s survivors include her four loving children: Richard Reynolds and his wife Darlene of Jacksonville FL, Donald Reynolds and his wife Gail of New Cumberland, Marlin Fought of Dillsburg, Nancy Whittaker and her husband Tom of Dillsburg; six grandchildren: Bryan Reynolds, Aimee Sheva, Katie Reynolds, Jim Reynolds, Donald Whittaker, Daniel Whittaker; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Viola in death are one brother: Harry Rickard; one sister: Mary Bricker; and one grandson: Michael Reynolds.
Viola’s viewing, graveside service and burial will be held in Trindle Spring Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mechanicsburg and at the convenience of the family with Pastor Richard G. Lorenz officiating. Tom Whittaker and Jim Ware will be singing a duet, I’ll Meet You in the Morning. Honored to be pallbearers are: Richard Reynolds, Donald Reynolds, Marlin Fought, Joe Sheva, Tom Whittaker and Dan Whittaker.
