Loved Her Family and Home -

Violet Elizabeth (Thumma) Smith, age 90, of Mechanicsburg, reunited with her husband “Red” on Sunday, April 19, 2020.  Violet was born on Sunday, March 30, 1930, in Mechanicsburg to the late Grace (Hollinger) Thumma and Elmer Ray Thumma, Sr.  Violet was the widow of Donald “Red” Eugene Smith, whom she married on July 29, 1948, and who died on February 16, 2018.  In addition to her parents and husband, Violet is preceded in death by her brother William Thumma and her beloved canine Holly.

Violet’s survivors include her two children: Donna J. May and husband Barry of Dillsburg, David E. “Dave” Smith and wife Melissa of Carlisle; her three grandchildren: Marcia J. Crites and husband Roger, Andrew J. Smith, Aaron M. Smith; her great-granddaughter Alicia Spotts; her three siblings: Grace Koser, Lois Bender, Elmer Thumma, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Violet graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1947.  As captain of her volleyball and basketball teams, Violet was voted “Most Athletic” in her class.  She enjoyed watching football and baseball. Violet especially treasured watching her grandchildren play baseball, and spending time with them kept her young. She loved her home and just being in it; cooking and baking and caring for her family.  Violet was a good mom who was always there for her children.

Violet’s immediate services will be private while family and friends are encouraged to remain safely at home.  Interment in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Enola will be at the convenience of the family.  Cremation was private.
