Wallace D. Stein
A True People Person -
Wallace D. Stein, age 93, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Ocean Pines, MD, died at Country Meadows on Thursday, August 18, 2016. Wally was born on Friday, April 27, 1923 in Delta, Iowa to the late Clarence E. Stein and Lois (Dunn) Stein. Wally was the widower of Mary (Kirk) Stein, whom he married on May 2, 1953, and who died on October 10, 1996.
Wally’s survivors include his two sons: Kirk Stein and his wife Carol, and their son Andy, of Camp Hill, and Todd Stein of New York City, NY.
Wally graduated from Delta High School as part of the class of 1936 and from Iowa State University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. He retired in 1986 from Dresser Industries/Petroleum Equipment Division, working as the National Account Sales Manager. Wally was a United States Navy Veteran who served on the U.S.S. Colorado (BB-45) during World War II. For his time in World War II, Wally earned a World War II Victory Ribbon, American Area Campaign Ribbon, Philippine Liberation – 1 Star, and Asiatic Pacific – 3 Stars. Wally was a member of Buckingham Presbyterian Church in Berlin, MD, since 1985. He was a member of Iowa State Alumni Association, U.S.S. Colorado Alumni Association, Society of Automotive Engineers, Green Hill Yacht & Country Club, Ocean Pines Golf Club, Ward Museum in Salisbury, MD, and was a founding member of the Salisbury Ski Club of Delmarva. Wally was a true people person who made friends with everyone and respected all people. He loved traveling and playing golf with his wife, Mary, and was a voracious reader later in his life. One of Wally’s greatest joys was being a grandfather, “G-dad” as Andy named him. He was deeply interested in Andy’s activities and always enjoyed hearing about his life and accomplishments.
All are welcome to join Wally’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Friday, August 26, 2016, beginning with full military honors presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard at 5:00 p.m. until time of blessing and remembrance at 7:00 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Ivy Hill Cemetery located at 1201 Easton Road, Philadelphia, PA. Cremation was private.
