Walter “Wick” Lynn Wickard
“Grandpa Grrrr” -
Walter “Wick” Lynn Wickard, 82, of York Haven , and formerly of Mechanicsburg , died at Memorial Hospital in York on Thursday, July 12, 2012. He was born in New Kingstown, on Friday, September 27, 1929, son of the late James Lehn Wickard and Laura Mae (Brenneman) Wickard. Wick was the husband of Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Deavers) Wickard whom he married on June 27, 1948.
Wick graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1948. He was a member of Future Farmers of America during high school. Wick played semi-pro football for the Harrisburg Bears and he served in the National Guard . Wick was an excellent bowler and a skilled craftsman, farmer and truck driver. He volunteered at the Lisburn Fire Company and particularly enjoyed the dunk tank and playing Santa Clause. Wick loved the kids and was affectionately known as “Grandpa Grrrr”. He was quite the kidder and loved to joke.
Wick’s survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Deavers) Wickard; two sons, Lennie Wickard and his wife Christy of New Cumberland, Bryan “Butch” Wickard and his wife Ruth of York; two daughters, Cathy Davenport and her husband Dennis of York Haven, Paula Faught and her husband Allen of Kentucky; four grandsons; four granddaughters; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Yohe of Carlisle, Vicki Lenker of Mechanicsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Wick in death are three sons, Walter Lynn Wickard, Jr., James Lynn Wickard, Jim Lehn Wickard; one grand-daughter Bobbi Jo Faught; four brothers, James, Jr. Wickard, Paul Wickard, Edgar Wickard, Clyde Wickard; and one sister Loyle Heisey.
All are welcome to join Wick’s family at his viewing on Monday, July 16, 2012, from 2:00 until time of celebration of life at 3:00 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with a funeral celebrant officiating. Wick’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, 61 Gettysburg Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, following the committal service. Cremation will be followed by burial in Mechanicsburg Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The family suggests memorial contributions in Wick’s name to an organization of the giver’s choice.
