Weir Cletus Hertzler, age 85, of Shiremanstown , died at Holy Spirit Hospital on Thursday, February 12, 2015, after a long battle with cancer.  Weir was born on Saturday, December 14, 1929 in Mechanicsburg to the late John Cletus Hertzler and Cora Emma (Weaver) Hertzler.  Weir was the widower of Dorothy (Engle) Hertzler, whom he married on August 4, 1951 and who died on June 29, 1993.

Weir’s survivors include his children: Gordon “Gordie” Hertzler and his fiancée, Tracie, of Etters, Sandra “Sandy” Vita and her husband, Anthony, of Bristol, Adele Pines and her husband, Thomas “Tom,” of Newport; his six grandchildren; his four great-grandchildren; his two siblings: Thelma Forry of Mechanicsburg, Marie Wilson of Camp Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Weir graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1948.  He then joined the United States Navy serving as a Seabee.  Weir retired from Ritter Bros. Construction in Harrisburg after many years of service working as a job superintendent.  He was a lifelong member of Shiremanstown First Church of God , where he served on the church council and sang in the choir.  Weir was a member of the American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose .  He enjoyed hunting and took many trips to his cabin with his brothers-in-law and family.  Weir was a huge NASCAR fan and cheered on Dale Earnhardt, Sr. as his favorite driver.  Once the weather warmed up, Weir could be found watching the Sprint Car races at Williams Grove Speedway .  Weir would travel to see the 410 Sprint Cars race as well.  He loved to spend time with his family at cookouts and on the beach during family vacations in Ocean City.  Weir was dedicated to both his job and his church, where he volunteered many hours in addition to his faithful Sunday attendance.  He enjoyed watching his two favorite football teams, the Washington Redskins and the Penn State Nittany Lions , play weekly.

Those personally invited by Weir’s family may join them at his viewing on Thursday, February 19, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Floyd R. Carlen officiating.  Burial in Slate Hill Cemetery in Camp Hill will be private.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Shiremanstown First Church of God , 35 South Locust Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011.
